he young Japanese pianist Waka Hasegawa made her Purcell Room debut in the Park Lane Group New Year Series this year, part of which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
She made her recital debut in Japan in 1996 and is now performing regularly in UK as well as on cruise ships. Waka trained at the Royal Academy of Music with Piers Lane, before continuing postgraduate studies with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. During this time she was awarded major prizes and scholarships including the John Ireland Prize, a KPMG/Martin Musical Scholarship, assistance from the Craxton Memorial Trust and second prize in the Brant Piano Competition in 1996.
Her repertoire is unusually wide-ranging, encompassing music from Bach to Hindemith, Szymanowski and contemporary works.
In addition to her solo playing, she is in demand as a chamber musician and regularly performs with pianist Joseph Tong and violinist Nadja Zweine.
