think part of my work is a mixture of so many different categories. It's painting; but it's got 3D elements and installation as well. I hang them quite a bit away from the wall and sometimes stand them up from the floor. It's always something to do with space. It's not like a painting hung on the wall.
Sometimes I get confused whether my work is painting or sculpture.
I just chose beautiful people. And also, I like the artificiality of film and actors and actresses. I think it's appropriate to my work. I'm trying to create my fantasy world in a gallery space. If you think of this material, MDF and gloss paint, they're artificial materials, casual as well. You can get them from a DIY shop. There's a glossy image and surface which I highlight as well. I'm adding something.
To me it doesn't really matter who they are. I do sometimes make it models. Now I have famous people or sometimes friends, but I always work from a photograph, a flat picture of real people, so even though they're famous, or friends, the process of making is the same. Also, I see it more as an abstract image in my work, like a flat colour, simple lines and shadows. If the colours match each other I'm quite happy with that.
I like to show my work. It's to do with confidence too. When I make something nice, big, beautiful, it gives me confidence to continue. I think if I was making tiny, small work it wouldn't really give me that confidence. That's important.
Also cut-outs are different to photographs. Making it is important. The craft, and how the hand made it. If I took a photograph and showed it in a gallery it would feel too easy. I want to be involved and make my own things that no-one else can make. That's why I didn't choose to work in oil on canvas.
